The first Susan B. Anthony dollars were struck in 1979 at all three mint facilities (San Francisco, Denver and Philadelphia).

A 1979 'Wide Rim' variety or the scarcer variety from 1979-P Susan B. Anthony Dollars, will have the date of the coin very close to the rim of the coin, and almost touching. After 1979 the 'Wide Rim' variety was then used to strike all other Susan B. Anthony dollars for the remainder of the series.

Issued in 1979, this One Dollar coin was issued in honor of Susan B. Anthony, the American woman who fought tirelessly for women's rights. These dollar coins were struck from 1979 to 1981, and again in 1999. There is a scarce Type 2 variety for both 1979 and 1981. The United States Mint introduced the Susan B. Anthony dollar in 1979. They had high hopes that this new smaller dollar coin would circulate well in the United States. The Treasury Department hoped that they would be able to eliminate the one dollar paper currency and save millions of dollars per year in manufacturing costs. Anthony silver dollar that was overstruck on a 1978 Jefferson Nickel sold at auction for $15,275. Made of about 92 percent copper and 8 percent nickel, the intrinsic melt value of a 1979 Susan B. Anthony silver dollar is 6 cents, based on 2014 metal prices. This is the business strike version of the San Francisco minted 1979 S Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Dollar. Typically coins minted in San Francisco during modern times are proof-only coins. Although this coin bears the 'S' mintmark and was put into general circulation and can also be found in Brilliant Uncirculated condition in mint sets as well.

The obverse die design was modified with a “wider” rim late in 1979. This design change affects P-mintmark dollars only.

The date placement on the die did NOT change, only the design of the rim. This “wider rim” design modification only gives the appearance of the date having been re-located. In fact, all of the outer design features near the rim appear closer including the stars, LIBERTY, and IGWT, but the date is the most commonly mentioned aspect of this ‘wide rim’ modification.
