Opening comment[edit]

Sources, etc. for anecdotes? They're good ones but without sourcing have the ring of urban legends.--Bltpdx 21:52, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Most are covered in The Biggest Game in Town by Al Alvarez, Big Deal by Anthony Holden and Positively Fifth Street by James McManus. Essexmutant 14:39, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Date of death?[edit]

Strange I found another source stating that he died in 1995 [1]

Along with this excerpt [[2]]

There are various other sources that state 1997 such as [3], I thinking of trusting newspaper clipping as it give the day and date, also pokernews list Marshall, Texas as place of birth as does the clip. Not sure how to resolve the conflict, still working... Sirex98 23:53, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Johnny
I think it's in James McManus' book somewhere. Also probably in 'All-In'. Will look when I get home. Essexmutant 00:08, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Thank you Essexmutant you do a lot of great work, ever get the feeling that it's like everybody knows who Johnny Damon is but Babe Ruth is unknown?, found this old Usenet posted Tues, Dec 19 1995 with same Obituary[[4]] also ther was another known Johnny Moss that did die in 1997 'John E. Moss, a Democratic congressman from California' [5]—Preceding unsigned comment added by Sirex98 (talk • contribs)
Being a Brit, I've never actually heard of Johnny Damon! :) Essexmutant 00:58, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Johnny moss wiki
^Make that David Beckham and Bobby Moore is guess ;) also if it is 1995 do you think there would be fair use rational argument to post on wikipedia the picture of that obituary chipping as a reference, incase the site dies Sirex98 01:23, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
At a guess I'd presume not. Feel free to ask at Wikipedia talk:Fair use though. Essexmutant 01:26, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Another source: the frontpage of this site is dedicated to Moss[[6]] Which says he was 88 when he died 'The “Grand Old Man of Poker,” Johnny Moss, the only three-time World Series of Poker champion, died of a heart attack on Dec. 16 at Medical Site Hospital in Odessa, Texas. He was 88' being that he was born 1907 and died at 88, thus 1907+88= 1995 , I now only can conclude that the 1997 date is in error as the these site are more comprehensive in their descriptions surrounding his death. Sirex98 02:55, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Will wait a bit for any rebuttal to this before reverting Sirex98 02:59, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

After thinking it over again, and to recap I have come to the conclusion that his death had to be in 1995,Three sites [7] , [8], Which states (moss)'died of a heart attack on Dec. 16') more significantly what you'll find at this website,[9] which has a photocopy of a newspaper obituary chipping of Moss, which gives the day, date and the time. The information in the chip is correct such as the information about his family, His wife was named Virgie Ann Moss who died January 1, 2002 [10]also there is an old newsgroup posting dated Dec 19, 1995 @ rec.gambling.poker, the posting match information of the clipping [11]and is mention later on another posting from 2000,[12]Note that when you read the clipping' Moss is the only three-time World Champion of Poker' this was true at the time; Stu Ungar didn't win his third until the 1997 World Series of Poker. Sirex98 12:06, 13 August 2006 (UTC)(correction date) Sirex98 05:35, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Johnny Moss died December 16, 1995. I was with him when he died at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.

He did NOT grow up in Odessa. He grew up in Dallas and traveled all over the southern part of the country and even served in the Navy Seabees. He didn't move to Odessa until the mid-'50s when he bought some land in town in order to be able to play in the area poker games. He couldn't play in them unless he owned land.

Nine or eight bracelets?[edit]

Most sources say that Johnny Moss won eight WSOP bracelets, but the Hendon Mob says he won nine. This would be possible if Johnny Moss' win at the 1970 counts as a bracelet. I don't want to change this and be incorrect. If someone had some input on this, we might be able to fix it in the article. Any suggestions? Red Director 23:46, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

The WSOP itself says 9: Main event 1970, Limit Ace-to-Five Draw in 1971, Main event in 1971, and then the others. I noticed that it was listed as 8 on the bracelet winners page as well. Lauracs 16:05, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

He does have 9, but for some reason the bracelet winners page leaves out the Draw bracelet from 1971. I think it should be changed. (UTC)

Johnny Moss Matches

It's now corrected. Here is a list of bracelet winners from thehendonmob.com Although he received a silver cup as his prize in 1970 it is still counted as part of his total bracelet count, even though it wasn't until later that actual bracelets were awarded to WSOP winners. His record is also listed at the Official website for the World Series of Poker which also gives his bracelet count as being nine.▪◦▪≡ЅiREX≡Talk 14:51, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Court case?[edit]

Didn't Moss win a famous court case against the IRS where he proved that poker is a game of skill and not gambling, therefore taxed at a lower rate? If so, I think that should be in the article. Bubba73(talk), 06:29, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Match with Nick the Greek[edit]

Johnny Moss

That the date is prior to the opening of the Horseshoe is significant. Also, in a bio of Nick, there is no mention of his playing with Moss at all altho Moss along with Jack Binion were listed in the book's final chapter as pallbearers.

I had never considered that it did not happen at all, and attributed the date simply to a mistake and perhaps the omission in Nick's bio to it not reflecting well on him.

Is 'mob boss' Benny Binion really the best 2 word descriptor for him? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Damedley (talk • contribs) 17:41, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

In the bio, it does mention some headsup play where Nick thought he was cheated, but the format was completely different from the supposed match with Moss. I am sorry I do not have the name of the author of the Dandolos bio, but it was written shortly after his death.--Jrm2007 (talk) 08:13, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Did you read the section in the article dealing with the match???---BalloonmanNO! I'm Spartacus! 07:04, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I did, and I guess the main point I am making is, a bio of Nick the Greek doesn't mention the match with Moss, either.--Jrm2007 (talk) 07:09, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
